New decks, deck replacements, and porches built for salt air, summer sun, and New England winters—by a family-owned Cape builder with more than 40 years on the job.
Built for the coast
A Cape Cod deck lives outside year-round in some of the hardest conditions in New England. The difference between a deck that looks good for a few summers and one that stays solid for decades is in the structure, the hardware, and the details you never see.
DC Builders has built and rebuilt decks across the Cape for more than 40 years. Owner Dave Cleary stays involved from the first site visit through the final railing, giving homeowners one experienced point of accountability throughout the job.

A deck often connects to a larger plan—an addition, a remodel, or a new home. DC Builders manages it all as one connected construction process.

Coastal deck construction
Salt air, sun, and freeze-thaw cycles are hard on decks—and the fastener and flashing choices matter as much as the decking brand. Ordinary hardware corrodes fast near the water, and a poorly flashed ledger is the most common cause of deck failure and rot against the house.
That's why DC Builders specifies stainless hardware near the water, details the ledger flashing properly, and builds code-compliant railings and stairs. It's the unglamorous work that decides whether a deck lasts.

Walk the site, look at the existing structure, and discuss size, materials, budget, and timing.
Finalize the layout, decking, and railing selections, then handle the building permit and any conservation review.
Demolition where needed, then framing, decking, railings, and stairs—managed on site with quality control at every stage.
Final inspection, cleanup, punch work, and a walkthrough of the finished deck.
“The decking brand gets the attention. The fasteners, flashing, and framing decide how long the deck lasts.”
DC Builders’ approach to coastal deck constructionCape Cod deck questions
Composite and PVC cost more up front but need far less maintenance—no sanding, staining, or sealing. Wood is the classic Cape look and costs less initially, but it needs regular upkeep to stay sound. Near salt water, the hardware matters most: stainless fasteners and proper flashing decide how long either deck lasts.
Typically yes. Most deck construction and replacement requires a building permit, and properties near wetlands, ponds, or the coast often need conservation commission review as well. DC Builders handles the permit process and schedules the required inspections as part of the job.
Often yes. The condition of the frame decides it: if the ledger, posts, and joists are sound, new decking and railings can go over the existing structure. If the frame has rot or undersized framing, a full rebuild is the safer and often more economical path. We assess that at the first site visit.
It depends on scope—a straightforward replacement moves faster than a new deck with covered porch framing. Permitting drives the lead time more than construction does, especially where conservation review applies. We lay out realistic timing for your property at the consultation.
